City Index Map

Elefsina: city_map constituted an interactive map; it offered the possibility of multiple and "customised" readings of the city, enabled the dialogue between its users, embodied the aspect of collaborative mapping.
The development of that map had already started in September 2006. During the exhibition in the Aeschylus festival, the residents of Elefsina were asked to express their opinions and concerns about their city, detecting on a projected map negative or positive aspects of spaces. After that initial collaborative process of data collection, more information about Elefsina was required. So, city index team studied widely the city through bibliography and in situ research and recording. A suitable structure of organising and classifying all different types of data was figured. The collected information belonged always to at least one of the following categories: 01_the three main historical periods of the city, 02_the space - represented in a map, 03_the index of toponyms, 04_the land uses, 05_the selected spatial notions. An online template was created combining - in a simple way - all those pieces of information which were not only juxtaposed, but also interlinked, letting each user experience different "narrations" with each new visit to the site. The users were also able to add, remove or comment on the given data.
